Getting to Chinatown

The easiest way of getting into Chinatown is by boat. You can get the Chao Phraya River Express to Ratchawong Pier and simply walk up the road from there. Alternatively, you can get the bus. Although plenty of bus services will take you there, in terms of experience, there’s no doubt the boat is the better option. There are no direct underground or Skytrain links available in Chinatown.

Getting to Khao San Road

You can take the Skytrain from the city centre to Saphan Taksin station and get on from Sathorn Pier to Phra Arthit Pier. All lines go through Sathorn Pier.

Your next choice would be boat, due to the lack of direct Skytrain to the area. This is definitely the most scenic method of getting around via the Chao Phraya Express Boat.

Alternative transport options include taxi, although insisting on the meter is a must, as well as tram and hop on/hop off tuk-tuks.

Not Great For

A budget trip

Sukhumvit is a huge main street spanning south-east from central Bangkok. It is the affluent who make their presence felt here. You’ll find lots of luxury hotels in Sukhumvit, alongside shopping centres, luxury spas and fine restaurants.

It’s not all flash and no substance though, this is a great area to stay if you are interested in Bangkok’s history. Sukhumvit has plenty of museums and activities to enjoy during your stay. There are also several parks for those who want to spend an afternoon just enjoying the simple pleasures that the city has to offer. Staying here lets you return to a calm area after exploring the more hectic parts of Bangkok.

Sukhumvit has plenty of transport options including Skytrain, MRT metro system, a bus service and even boats. Mostly they are all fine if you know your route, although the boat option is more entertaining than it is practical, and the bus service is one of the most congested in a city known for having congestion issues.
